How to Effectively Use Social Media By Giving Away Free Samples & Freebies

 

 

Social media is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal to exponentially grow your free sample reach. Social media allows you to get your free sample offer in front of hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people. Best of all, you don’t have to use the power of your own reach. When done properly, a freebie marketing campaign can spread like wildfire through the social sphere, far beyond just your followers and fans.

So how do you effectively use social media to give away free samples and freebies?

Give a Gift for Every Retweet

Give every person who retweets your tweets about your giveaway campaign a prize. The prize could be another freebie item, it could be promotional code, it could be a “cash value” coupon good for anything you sell.

Tweet or Post a Review and Get a Prize

Another way you can encourage people to talk about your brand is to reward them for posting reviews. Send people free products, then ask them to write a review and tweet it out.

Again, reward people who take the effort to tweet out a review. Give them a coupon code or give them another free gift.

If someone posts a particularly good review, retweet it on your own Twitter feed. It helps create a sense of appreciation for your reviewers, as well as generates social proof for your product.

Use the “Both Win” Model

Use a model of referrals where both the person sharing and the person who’s reading win. Instead of just commissions, where only the person doing the sharing gets paid, or coupon codes which only benefit the user and not the person sharing, this model creates an incentive for both sides.

A prime example is how Dropbox built its business by giving anyone who refers a friend 250 MBs of free storage. The person being referred also gets another 250 MBs for free. Both sides win. A lot of people shared Dropbox’s value proposition, because people wanted to benefit both themselves and their friends.

 

Host a Contest on Social Media

Another way you can make good use of social media is to host a contest. Instead of just giving away one free sample, you could get people excited about the possibility of winning even higher value items.

For example, you can give away a free sample worth $2 to every participant in your content. The top 25 entrants get a prize worth $20 and the top 5 get a prize worth over $300. The #1 prize might be an all-inclusive package worth over $1,000.

This kind of contest can generate a ton of buzz in an industry. If your prizes are good, people will talk about it, tweet about it and post about it. Furthermore, every entrant you get to your contest will have to give you their contact information. You’ll be able to get a ton of people in your target market your free samples.

Consider the cost of your prizes the price of an effective marketing campaign. $1,000 or so in prizes isn’t much compared to how much you’d spend in other kinds of media to get a similar amount of exposure.

Pay for Social Media Coverage

Finally, you can also use paid social traffic to get people to buy your product. There are a few different ways you can do this.

On Twitter, you can use Sponsored Tweets. Sponsored Tweets is a marketplace that puts together people who’re willing to post items in exchange for money with advertisers. Look for other Twitter users in your market and see if you can affordably sponsor a tweet on their channel.

On Facebook, you can use the Facebook PPC advertising platform to get the word out about your free samples. This works best with a viral campaign, as it’s rare that a straight PPC to free sample campaign will be profitable simply because of how much you have to pay per click.

When used properly, social media can truly be a force to be reckoned with. It can take your free sample campaign and spread it all over the internet. Reward people for sharing, reward people for reviewing, reward both sides (receiver & reviewer) and use paid traffic to get your campaign off the ground.
